Abstract

This paper examines a tension in Hume’s philosophy between his epistemic critique of superstition and his naturalistic epistemology. While Hume faults superstition for its epistemic flaws, naturalistic interpretations often claim that he evaluates reasoning by its psychological force, such as liveliness or irresistibility. This raises a challenge: if superstitious reasoning stems from standard psychological processes and exhibits psychological strength, how can it be epistemically discredited? I argue that Hume’s notion of good reasoning involves more than psychological force. He appeals to calm passions as an additional normative standard. Calm passions arise in response to epistemic factors, particularly certainty, whereas superstitious reasoning provokes violent passions through its uncertainty. Importantly, however, calmness does not require absolute certainty, and it marks a moderate and attainable level of epistemic commitment—one that enables inquiry while resisting the violent agitation characteristic of both superstition and radical skepticism.

発表概要

出口康夫 文学研究科教授、渡邊一弘 成長戦略本部特定助教は、廣瀬朋由 株式会社お金のデザイン取締役副会長・ファウンダーと、産学連携共同研究「ひとが投資をするとはどういうことか―『自己形成としての投資』に関する概念分析と価値提案」を実施しました。

本研究では「ひとが投資をするとはどういうことか」という根源的な問いを設定し、アリストテレスや西田幾多郎、現代の物語的自己論が教える哲学的概念や理論を渉猟しつつ、「自己形成としての投資」という観点から資産形成の本質を考察しました。今後はこの考え方をさまざまな現場で活用することで、私的な価値の追求と公共的な価値への配慮とが互いの実現を促し合うような実践を、広く社会に生み出していくことを目指します。

本研究成果は、2025年3月31日に、ホワイトペーパーとして公表されました。

「人文学、特に哲学は『新たな価値の提案』の学です。一方、過去1世紀ほど、哲学においても、専門化・細分化―Th.クーンの言葉を借りれば―『通常科学（normal science）化』が進み、このような哲学本来のあり方が見失われる傾向がありました。21世紀も中葉を迎えつつ、一層混迷を深めつつある世界を前にして、哲学は、今一度、『価値提案の膂力』を鍛え直す必要があります。今回の共同研究プロジェクトは、このような『鍛え直し』の一助ともなりうるのではないかと期待しています。」（出口康夫）

「哲学をビジネスに活かそう、ビジネスにも哲学的思考が必要だ、などと言われるのを耳にするのもここ数年で珍しいことではなくなりました。しかし、哲学の知識やスキルをビジネス向けにパッケージ化して提供するだけでは、大して面白いものは生まれないかもしれません。もっと大事なのは、フィールドを異にする者どうしが対話をつうじてお互いの思考のブラインドスポットを照らしあい、そこにあるものをともに言語化していくことではないでしょうか。この共同研究を通じて、そのような思いを強くしました。」（渡邊一弘）

We are delighted to announce that Professor Rein Raud (School of Humanities, Tallinn University) will deliver a special lecture. Please find the details below.

Title: Time, power, values and agency: a processual view of ethics and politics

Abstract: One of the often-voiced criticisms of process philosophy is that it has not produced any original ethical or political thought of note. Indeed, most mainstream socio-philosophical theories usually rely on object-oriented ontological premises, taken as self-evident, which see social phenomena and political entities as “things” or “agents”, unitary, self-identical and continuous in time, and present their interactions as accidental additions to what they essentially are. I will try to reverse this position by putting situations and events first, by adding a temporal dimension to any political phenomenon, and by presenting a brief outline of a relational discourse for modelling and analyzing social processes based on this approach. This will include a process-ontological view of power, social institutions, and collective subjectivities. I hope to show that such a new paradigm may have far-reaching implications for our ethical reasoning and is well suited for moving beyond the habitual anthropocentric and individualistic view.

出口教授が第7回日立京大ラボ・京都大学シンポジウム「新たな価値の社会実装」に登壇します。

概要

現代社会において経済価値が重視される傾向が強い中で、持続可能性を支える環境価値や、人間中心の社会価値といった多様な価値への関心が高まっています。さらに、これらの価値を社会実装するには、多くのステークホルダーが関与し、それぞれの異なる価値観や利害が複雑に絡み合う現実があります。本シンポジウムでは、一見すると対立することもある多様な価値をどのように調和させ、経済価値に留まらない「新たな価値の社会実装」を進めていくかを議論します。各社が描くビジョンや、実際の現場で直面する課題を共有しながら、具体的な解決策や実践の方向性を探ります。
